Dan's Flog (Fishing Log)

Tony and I went out for fun today and we had one BIG problem.  We couldn't find any reds under 28 inches until about 12:00.  I caught my limit of oversized reds and then some.  Finally we found our slot fish and quickly boxed 5 more keeper reds along with 3 drum and a trout.  The high water has put the fish in the expected areas.

I was still on Capt. Tony's boat today and it was a blessing in disguise.  I had Rodney Crosby with his 3 boys.  Cade and  Cooper were twin 6 year olds and Cole was 9.  These kids love to fish.  They were excellent on the boat.  We decided to fish shell first and we had a lot of break offs.  I think Tony tied leaders for 2 hours straight.  Our first couple of stops brought us 9 solid fish, mostly drum and the we headed to one of my favorite high water spots for the afternoon redfish bite.  After a couple of anchors, we found 6 big reds and a few more drum.  I think Cole wanted to mount every redfish he caught.  These kids did better fighting fish than a lot of my adult clients.  I was very impressed with their fishing ability.  Dad was very patient with them and their teamwork paid off bigtime for them.  The total catch today was 8 sheepshead, 4 drum and 6 big reds.  Way to go kids!!!

Today I was with an awesome family on spring break.  The Millers came down to fish and we had a few problems today.  Our first stop brought in 7 keeper fish, but then the motor went out on my boat.  It wasn't until later I found out that the power head had blown.  The Millers wanted to continue fishing so we jumped on a friends boat and kept after the fish.  We made a few more stops and found some more drum and a few reds before the wind really started howling.  This family was so nice during all the difficulties of the day- THANK YOU for being so wonderful!  Even with all the challenges the day brought, we still found fish.

Today Matt and Mitch got to go head to head again and the results were about the same.  Matt just seemed to have the luck on his side and he managed a few more than Mitch.  We fished all over before I decided to make a long run to Seadrift, but as always it paid off.  We had several different species and the whole family helped fill the box.  I think this is what fishing and the outdoors is all about- family spending time with family and having fun while doing it.

3-21-08 Big Reds for the Fishing Family PDF Print E-mail
This afternoon the Neville family came out with me.  They had been out with guides before, but the luck hadn't been the best.  We made a few moves before we found the fish, but when we did it was all I could do to keep rods in the water.  The fish were in deep shell and we lost more than we caught.  This family was so happy to be on the water and I was glad the fish showed up for them.  They had some really nice reds and a few sheepshead to go with it.  I hope to see them again when the trout bite turns on.
