Scout trip for the weekend with one of the Lighthouse crew and things went well.  The wind was gone for a day after the rain and the fishing was fair.  We found some trout over by the convent and then went out to Mesquite for the early morning bite.  we picked up a few fish here and there.  The bigger trout and redfish came in over shallow shell.  We had 9 torut and a red.  It wasn't hot, but we still found a few fish.

4-19-07 WOHOO MORE WAHOO!!!! PDF Print E-mail

Another calm day for April so it was off to the blue water.  We were headed for Baker, but the current wanted us to go to Southern.  We went out past the Aransas Banks and looked for some structure to fish.  The grass was thick, but scattered.  "Eagle Eye Philly" saw a black tube floating in the water and we decided to make a pass.  It was FISH ON instantly.  We made four passes and each time the wahoo nailed out divers.  It was Philly's first wahoo andit was a nice one.  After we filled the box with wahoo, we went to Southern to look for some tuna or amberjack.  We lost a tuna on the first pass, but the amberjack were on the old rig and we put the hurt on them.  We added one rainbow runner for color and started home.  It was an awesome day in the blue water.  I have been on lots of private charters, but I have never been on a boat with that many wahoo!!!  All the credit goes to the man upstairs-  Thanks!!

I decided to do some "on the water research" today.  I changed from my usual fishing areas even though they were on the hot spot list and went out of Ingleside.  It was windy again and my goal was to find some good water in the wind.  I found some nice water in East flats and Shamrock Cove, but it wasn't holding any fish.  I did find a couple of nice "holes" in the flats that I will certainly try again when that water is hot.  I felt like a beat dog after running across the rough C.C. Bay waters, but I wasn't willing to quit yet.  I watched the wind direction and tried to think like a fish.  I made one last drift in a new area and it was on.  I didn't find any small trout, but I did find several over 20 inches and one 24 3/4 inch trout.  The big one was a perfect tournament fish coming in just at the limit.  Could this be the spot to fish at in Babes on the Bay???

4-11-07 WAHOO ON BAKER RIG PDF Print E-mail
It was one of those rare chances in April to go offshore.  I have been watching the wave forecast everyday for looking for this window.  Keith Ross and I left the docks at about 8:30 with high hopes for the day.  After we broke the jetties, it looked grim.  The water was sloppy and the wind switched out of the North.  We chased a few near shore shrimp boats without any luck and waited for the seas to lay down.  We made it out to the 20 mile mark and the water was still ugly with little or no color.  We kept going and finally found the color change we had been looking for, but the weren't any kingfish in it.  We hit 3 or 4 rigs before we realized that it was getting smoother.  Around noon, we headed for Baker.  When we got there, it was pretty grassy.  The new wahoo lures weren't going to do me any good in this kind of grass.  We tied up for a few minutes and then the grass blew out.  It wasn't long before we had all the lines hooked up with nice wahoo.  They were coming out of the water and making quite a scene.  We hit another rig with the same results.  When the wahoo hit, they all went off at once.  We also had a few big jackfish also.  It is nice to set out with a target species and actually have things go as planned.  This only makes me more excited about what the summer holds for us when it goes flat.  NO MORE WIND MEANS BIG OFFSHORE FISH!!!!

Today we went into San Antonio bay to fill the box up with the freshwater blue catfish.  All the creeks are overflowing into the Mission Bay area and it is full of blue cats.  We had about 40 catfish, 3 big drum, and a few trout.

4-5-07 More Wind and Dirty Water PDF Print E-mail
Today I took Scott and Nancy Landgraf out for an afternoon on the water.  The wind had been ripping for a couple of days and the flood waters made San Antonio Bay a giant pond of chocalate milk.  We saw a bunch of dolphins and made Nancy really happy, but the fishing was slow.  We caught several fish, but they were mostly small ones.  The blue cats were in San Antonio bay and we found a few trout in Mesquite Bay, but there was not a consistent bite.  I love fishing with this group and hope to see them again.
